At the only international fur auction in Russia, which finished last week in Saint-Petersburg, the joint stock company "Sojuzpushnina"(100 % of its shares belong to the government) sold pelts of the valuable varieties of animals for $10 million. This is the biggest profit margin at auction in the last six years.
Today "Sojuzpushnina" is the only auction company on the territory of The Russian Federation and countries of The CIS, which organizes international fur auctions. During the Soviet time the annual turnover of an auction platform could be up to $150 million. Following the collapse of The USSR the range of goods fell sharply. "According to the head of the "Sojuzpushnina" marketing department Irina Gandiljan, today"s expansion of the range of goods at the auction is determined by two causes. The first cause is the enlargement of deliveries. So, if there were 93 thousand mink pelts delivered to the last year auction, more than 200 thousand pelts are delivered to the present auction, the supply of sable has also increased from 109.4 thousand to 127.7 pelts. The second cause is the consolidation of the suppliers, who have jointly managed to achieve a small price increase for their production. For example, the average price of the sable pelt went as high as $57,71 this year, which is 6% higher than last year"s price. About 100 customers from 12 countries took part in the auction - first and foremost, from Greece, Italy and Turkey. It"s remarkable that a lot of the fur, purchased by foreign customers, soon returns to Russia - but in the form of ready-made garments. The point is that according to "Sojuzpushnina" statistics Russia consumes about a third of the world"s fur goods (except for exclusive production) - we sell fur coats, fur hats and other fur goods totalling $500 million a year. And this is completely understandable. On the one hand, we have a suitable climate plus little confrontation with environmental activists, who have in fact destroyed natural fur markets in developed countries during the last 10-15 years. On the other hand, our interior fur industry is almost extinct and unable to compete with fur dealers from abroad.
